IMPROVEMENT TOMORROW

Special forecast for Wellington:— Strong south-easterly winds reaching gale force at times. . Weather cold, dull, and misty, with further heavy rain. Conditions, however, improving during tomorrow. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for- the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for westerly to south-westerly winds to the north of Kawhia and Tauranga. Elsewhere winds will be southerly or south-easterly in direction and moderate to strong, gale force being reached at times north of Greymouth and Kaikoura. The weather will be cloudy to overcast, with further rain in most, districts. Some heavy falls are still probable in central provinces. An improvement, however, should be showing up in the western and southern districts of the South Island, and a more general improvement will be setting in during tomorrow. Temperatures will be cold.

Except for some scattered rains in

the western and southern parts of the South Island which accompanied the northerly to westerly winds that prevailed, the weather on Saturday was mainly fair with warm temperatures. During Saturday night, however, an intense cyclonic depression approached the Dominion, and since Sunday morning this has been centred to the west of the Cook Strait area. As a result, the weather generally changed for the worse,..becoming unsettled, c|ull, and misty. Rain has been widespread since Sunday morning, there having been many heavy falls, especially in the North Island and. on the East Coast of the South Island. At Cape Egmont a fall of 577 points has I been recorded, and falls of from one to three inches have been reported frdm a number of other places. A change to southerly or south-easterly, winds has taken place about and to\ the south of Cook Strait, gale force being reached in the latter area and on the West Coast of the.South Island. There has been a decided fall in temperatures. Auckland's weather during the weekend '-is fair to cloudy, with light to mode; ate winds mainly from the northeast. Late on Sunday afternoon, however, it clouded over and showers fell during the night. At 9 a.m. today the weather was fair with a light westerly breeze. ■ *' Wellington had a fine day on Saturday with 12 hours of bright sunshine, A strons and squally north-westerly wind prevailed, but this changed to a cold and fresh southerly about 6.30 a.m. on Sunday, Rain then set in, 26 points being recorded up to 9 a.m. The weather continued'cold and wet all Sunday, the rain, which has been almost continuous, totalling a further. 221 points up to 9 a.m. today Saturday's maximum temperature was 69.4' degrees, but yesterday's was only 36.5 degrees. The minimum temperatures on the two days were 53.8 and 48.6 degrees respectively. In Chrjstchurch on Saturday it was warm and sultry, with a light northerly wind. Rain set' in about 7 p.m. and continued throughout the night, the wind changing to: a fresh southerly. The rainfall totalled 114 points up to 9 a.m. on Sunday" , which was a cold, dull, and wet day, with a fresh southwesterly wind. Sunday's rain totalled 104 points. Temperatures fell considerably, as in Wellington, Saturday's maximum being. 79.1 degrees, but Sunday's only 52. • Dunedin had overcast weather on Saturday, a light easterly breeze changing to'the* south during the afternoon. Rain fell, during Saturday night, and the we,ather on Sunday was mostly dull, winds being light and'variable. The weather this morning, was overcast with a south-westerly breeze.
