SERVICE AT END
ST. HELENS HOSPITAL
CEREMONY AT DUNEDIN
(By Telegraph—Press' Association.) DUNEDIN, January 23. Established and opened 33 years ago by Richard John Seddon, then Prime Minister, St. Helens Maternity Hospital was officially closed on Saturday afternoon. It performed valuable service to the motherhood of the city at a time when maternity welfare was in urgent need of improvement, but with the passage of time and the advances made in the science of obstetrics its usefulness has come to an end, and its operations have been taken over by the modern Queen Mary Maternity Hospital. Dr. Paget, Inspector of Hospitals, presided at the ceremony, and the principal speaker was the Minister of Health (the Hon. P. Fraser). A total of 5500 babies has been born in the precincts of the hospital and another 1500 in the district during the time the district nurse has been operating, so that the institution has been responsible for the care of 7000 babies, while nearly 200 midwives have been trained.
