SEAMEN'S PAY
NEW ZEALAND RATES
(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, December 29. Under the heading "Skipper paid less than cook," the shipping correspondent of the "London Daily Telegraph and Morning Post" describes as "astonishing" statements which appeared in the New Zealand Press regarding rates of pay in certain "vessels in the Dominion. ' The article states that in one case the master of a vessel was paid just over £40 a month, while the cook received more than £50, and that in another case the second mate was.the lowest paid man on board. Other instances are cited of large amounts of overtime pay drawn by cooks and firemen. "These sidelights on Socialist Administration of shipping may explain why the other Dominions' concerned are holding out against New Zealand's request that one of the projected liners for the Pacific 'All Red' route shall be registered in that Dominion," the correspondent comments.
