RISE CONTINUED

BRITISH BIRTH-RATE

(British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, January 19. The rise in the British birth-rate continued last year, according to returns by the Registrar-General.

The birth-rate in England and Wales in 1937 was estimated at 14.9 births per 1000 of population. The crude death-rate was 12.4 per 1000. Deaths of children under, one year were 48 per 1000 births.

The birth-rate, shows an increase of .10 over 1936, but the crude deathrate is the highest since 1929, being .3 above that of 1936. The increase is largely associated with the heavy influenza mortality of the first quarter of the year. Infant mortality is 1.0 below that of 1936.
