BIG ATTACK PENDING

JAPANESE FORCES

POSSIBLE OBJECTIVE

LUNGHAI RAILWAY

SNOW HALTS OPERATIONS

(United Press Association—By Eleclrlc Tclccrapb—Copyright.) (Received January 21, 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, January 20. The correspondent of the British United Press at Shanghai reports that the Japanese spokesman reveals that Japan is preparing a big attack. The sector is not disclosed but it is assumed to be the Lunghai railway, with the immediate objectives of Kaifeng, Kweiteh, and Suchow. Japanese advancing on the Tient-sin-Pukow railway occupied Minkwang. Fierce fighting took place south of Penghu, the possession of which will assure control of the southern section of the railway. A message from Hankow states that despite Japanese reports that they relieved the pressure on Wuhu the' Chinese still claim that the city is surrounded.

Snow is bringing the operations to a standstill on most fronts.

Shanghai reports that it is reliably reported that Mr. Hsu Shijying, Ambassador at Tokio, has been handed Japan's latest peace terms. The British United Press says a report is current that Japan is submitting new peace terms providing for the withdrawal of forces except from the Peking, Tientsin, Suiyuan, and Chaliar regions, with the right to nominate mayors in the chief cities. Foreign observers doubt the authenticity of the news.
