AMATEUR ATHLETICS
VISITORS FROM TRINiDAD
. Passengers due to arrive at Wellington tomorrow morning by the Remuera from England include three coloured athletes and a manager from Trinidad. The athletes are J. N. Cumberbatch (sprinter), N. Stanford (one mile), and J. Ashmead (broad jumper), and they are en route to the British Empire Games at Sydney. They are to be met on arrival by < Messrs. B. Sutherland, F. Bond, and A. D.-Rowse, on behalf of the Wellingtonl Amateur Athletic Centre, which has arranged for training facilities for the^team.
As the athletes will have little time' in Sydney in which to recover from their long:sea voyage before the Empire Games open, they are anxious to. do as much training work as possible before they leave "Wellington by the Awatea on Monday.' They are to be given the choice tomorrow of competing either at the sports meetings- at Masterton or Otaki or simply going to Hataitai Park for training. This ground will be at their disposal while they are' here.
Wellington competitors wity be represented at both the Otaki and Masterton meetings, and a team from the Wellington Club, about 60 strong, in charge of Mr. A. Hose, will be competing at Wanganui at night. The members of this party are to leave in two buses from the Public Library at 9 a.m. and are to return on Sunday night. Although the team already is a large one, there is still room for any other members of the club who wish to make the trip. The meeting at Wanganui is to be held at Cook's Gardens under electric light, and will complete the annual competition between the Wanganui and Wellington club teams.
