SEARCH FOR OIL
GEOLOGIST'S OPINION
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.
Geological observations on the volcanic history of Mount Egmont and the surrounding districts have been made during the past fortnight by Dr. G. D. Osborne, of the Department of Geology, University of Sydney. The work, which is not yet complete, is being done in association with the Department of , Scientific and Industrial Research, Wellington.
Dr. Osborne would not give any expression of opinion about oil in Taranaki, but poinetd out that it was clear that New Zealand would see a great recrudescence of interest in the search for oil in commercial supplies "There is no doubt that the correct thing to do is to have a thorough scientific investigation of all areas which give any promise, at least in the Taranaki, Gisborne, and Murchison regions," .he said. ■
Dr. Osborne explained that his work is of. a special character and purely scientific in nature. He was not on any. commercial geological work,. but was endeavouring to obtain sufficient material to carry out laboratory' investigations upon petrology of many volcanic rocks found in the province.
