Exceptionally .wild weather was experienced in southern England during the 'night, and id • the Channel a gale, which is now moderating, is reported to have reached.'at times a velocity of 'eighty miles stn hour. Shipping received a sevei/e buffeting, and small craft were drhjen to shelter.
The promenades at resorts on the south-east coafif; were awash. The gale delayed the departure from Devonport ii>f. the aircraft-carrier Glorious and itfhe battleship Revenge.
There was ja temporary suspension through fioocHhg of omnibus and rail services at Dlslgelly and Barmouth, in Wales. .
The Teritflf lifeboat effected the rescue of ieigßit of the crew of nine of the small stteamer Fermanagh. The crew burned! their bedding to call assistanoe whejj the vessel, whose master is missing, "was in difficulties off the Pembroke Cfljast.
