POSITION EASED

OFFICIAL1 STATEMENT

NO COMPULSION TO NORTH

(British Official Wireless.)

RUGBY, January 15.

The diplomatic correspondent of "The Times" says that the problem presented by partition has been appreciably eased by statements by Mr. de Valera and previously by Mr. Cosgrave, former President of the Free State Executive, that the Government of the rest of Ireland would not apply compulsion to the six northern counties in any circumstances. • •

"It is out of the question, of course," adds "The Times," "that Britain should do so."
