In the first innings Gear's j best batsmen were Tovey 105 and Murphy 47. Fletcher's leading scorers . in their^first innings were Edwards 44 and Pauling 70. In the second innings ' Tovey made 69 for Gear and for < Fletcher's Edwards scored 26 and i Pauling 45. . , The Gear wickets were taken by t Mushett, one for one, Pauling, four for , 31 and six for 74, Petry, one for 30 and > one for none, and Thompson one for eight and three for 18. In the annual Spencer Challenge ' Shield cricket match played at Maid- ' stone Park yesterday the single men of ; Taita beat the married eleven, giving . the teams two wins apiece in the shield single men made 252 (D. Pilcher 51 not out, B. McNabb 45, L. Ward 25, , L Searle 27), P. Moore taking seven wickets, H. A. Cullimore two, and H. < McLeod one. The married team's total 1 was 208 (L. Pudney 73, P. Moore 22, A. I Kilmister 22), A. Hawten taking six 1 wickets and L. Ward, McNabb, and J. < Meyrick one each. ..- .-,„..,. < In a hard-hitting match at Maidstone Park yesterday the Petone Cricket Club-defeated an Upper Hutt Cricket Association eleven. '~'„„■ t Petone made 176 (J. Boddy 78 not out) and 179 for seven wickets, declared (C. Waddington 52 J-.-Boddy 45, C. Hudson 25 not out). Upper Hutt made 103 and 168 (Aukram 57, Falloon 25. A. Baker.2o). ■ _■_■, Bowling for Upper Hutt, E. Baker took five wickets for 63 and four or 56, Keable three for 23, Falloon two for 43, C. Hudson two for 12, J. Asplet three for 34, L. Edney two for 8, A, Macfarlane two for 25. _ Kilbirnie R.S.A. 148 (Barnett 34, Lucas 23) and 163 (Denton 35 retired McLeod 24, Barnett 23, B. Brown 21) defeated Upper Hutt R.S.A 96 (Beech 41 not out) and 65 for eight wickets. For Upper Hutt RiS.A., Beech and McCrae bowled well.
