AT HATAITAI

FINE HALF-MILE FINISH

One of the best contests at the interclub scratch meeting at Hataitai Park in the afternoon was the A grade halfmile. It drew three starters, and the time was slow, but there was an excellent finish, the three competitors sprinting for the tape together. T. McCashin (Wellington) just won from L. S. Black (University), the Wellington champion.

The fields were small, and many of the competitors, it was obvious, had done little training over the holiday period. This was particularly noticeable in the case of J. Ford, who performed with some distinction in the Empire Games trials by running second in the furlong. Today, however, he was easily beaten by J. Eastwood. Eastwood is a very fair sprinter, but Ford in top condition could hold him.

C. Robinson, the provincial sprint champion, had a walk-over in his division of the 220 yards—rather unsatisfactory for a runner keen to have serious opposition, and a reflection upon the type of competition now in voguei

A. J. Mackay, the local champion, had a very easy win in the three miles. The time was slow, but then Mackay who beat the second man, A. Bourgeois, by over- 300 yards, had no occasion to run himself out.

An interesting' competitor in the 220yds hurdles was H. Abraham, holder of the provincial 220yds and 440yds hurdles titles. Abraham, who is; now on the staff of Melbourne University, is. at present on holiday. He was second to J. Hamilton in the low hurdles and 'won the quarter-mile event < '•
