INDIGENT ARRIVALS
CHARGES UPON CHARITY
PREVENTIVE MEASURE URGED
The need for provision being made to prevent people from overseas landing in the Dominion without sufficient funds for their support while . they seek employment is stressed by social workers, reports the "New Zealand Herald." Three youths who arrived from Australia recently were penniless within three days of landing in Auckland. They were then compelled to seek shelter from the Salvation Army authorities. This is described as a typical instance of what is happening.. It is pointed out that reports of high wages in the Dominion are often attracting men from overseas, without financial resources. Another trend causing, concern is the growing number of young men and youths who travel from town to town, and who are prepared to work for brief periods only. "Many of these young fellows have no sense of responsibility," said Mr. N. G. Gribble, youth employment placement officer. "We simply cannot recommend them to employers. The problem is becoming very serious. Often we cannot elicit from them their home town or the address of their parents. "One youth, who was absolutely without funds, and who was very vague about his parents' address, admitted that his father was sick and had seven children to support," Mr. Gribble added. He laughed at the idea that in the circumstances his place was at home where he could help to support his family^ j
