AIR-MAIL RATES

EFFECT^OF REDUCTION

THE BRITAIN-MALAYA ROUTE

[Received January 12, 2 p.m.)

LONDON, January 11. The aeronautical correspondent of "The Times," discussing the introduction of the lid air-mail postac^ rate between Britain and Malaya on February 23 and its extension to Australia later, says, "During the six months that have elapsed since the introduction of the l^d rare on the South African route, the weekly mail loads have been ten times as heavy as under the surcharge system. The flying-j boat route to Singapore is now prepared 'and sufficient Empire flyingboats have been delivered to operate the extra service. Imperial Airways' weekly mail loads to India and Malaya are about 36001b, and other first-class mail amounts to 20,0001b a week.

"By the evidence of the African mails it may be assumed that the whole of that additional load will be carried by airliners after February 23, and sweeping changes in the operational scheme will be required. Instead of the present bi-weekly services between Britain and India there must be four, operated by Empire flying-boats, in order to absorb the big mail loads."
