AUSTRALIA V. U.S.A. \

BROMWICH AND BUDGE WIN

SYDNEY, December 16.

In the tennis Test Australia v. Am* rica, the first' singles matches re« suited:—

J. H. Bromwich (Australia) beat C G. Mako (America), 6-3, 6-3, 6-1. •

J. D. Budge (America) beat A. X Quist (Australia), 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0.

Mako came to the net at,every opportunity but was repeatedly passed by Bromwich, whose corner and sideline drives were brilliant.. .

Early in the second match Quist's serves and forehand shots were too strong for Budge, who was hitting tha tape or just missing the baseline. From 1-4 in the second set, however, tha American found touch. Thereafter ha was always in command and scored numerous placements with his .sweep* ing backhand. , . ;
