CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION

SUPPORT PROMISED

Support for the proposal' of jthe Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities' Association to hold, an electrical court at "the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in -1940 was ,der cided upon at the meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board yesterday afternoon.

The chairman of the Power Boards' Association exhibition committee (Mr. S. Blackley) said that the committee hoped not only to do something educational but also to advertise thei use of electricity and .point out the advantage to the public. This was the beginning of a programme of work that should be commenced immediately and be carried on during the nej:t two >ears. Subscriptions were being spread over three payments and quite a considerable sum would be spent, before November, 1939. He hoped there would be a court of about 8000 square feet and this would include a* section, it was hoped, for the 'electrical trade.

The general manager of the Exhibition was leaving for overseas ;.and lie .would- inspect the electrical."exhibit at .the Glasgow Exhibition; '. and also an allBritish electrical i exhibition. . . ',-

Mr,' Blackley presented a report which, stated that £10,000 would be necessary to finance the central court and stafT and maintain it for the six months' duration 'of the Exhibition. It was hoped- that the Hydro-Electric Department (Government) wpuld be included in- the electrical court, but this was not yet decided.

Mr.Blackley-said., that if a certain sum, which he could not- divulge, was not raisbd'the committee could-not go on with the'proposal. ;; Mr. P. Dowse asked whether, the proposed court1 would be-large enough, Mr; Blackley replied that what -could be got:into the: court was the point. On" the motion: of Mr: J. W. Andrews, seconded by Mr., A., J. McCurdy, the meeting decided that the sum of £450 be paid "to -the exhibition committee of the; Po"wer Boards'- Association towards'the cost of an electrical court at the Exhibition. .
