RHODES SCHOLARS

THE TRUST'S REPORT

.The report of the Rhodes Trust, London, for the academic year 1936-37 states that during the year 68 Rhodes Scholars took up their scholarships for the first time.

The number of. scholars regularly in residence for either the whole or some: part of the year was 185, of whom 93 were from the British Empire, 86 from the United States, and six from Germany.. In the course of the year 66 scholars went out of residence on the expiration of their scholarships.

The following New Zealanders are mentioned in the 1937 examination results:—L. F. Moller, B.C.L. degree, 2nd class; I. F. G. Milner, Final Honour Schools, Ist class, philosophy, politics, j and economics; W. F. Monk, Final ( Honour Schools, 2nd class, modern: history; E. P. Haslam, Final Honour' Schools, 2nd class, philosophy, politics, and economics; N. Davis, diploma in' comparative philology, with distinction.

In addition I. F. G. Milner won the New College essay prize and was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship.

Of former New Zealand Rhodes Scholars -mention is inaate tif Dr. A-_E. Porritt's appointment as Surg'eori-in-Ordinary to the King a d Queen and to his award of the Order of the -Olympic Cross (Ist class), to M. McG. Cooper's captaincy of the Oxford Rugby team against Cambridge, to J. A. Dunning's selectiba to represent New Zealand in the cricket Test matches against England on the New Zealand team's Home tour this year, ana 'to the publicatioh by 3. -E. Lovelock of "Athletics 'for Health; Running Theory and Practice."
