With the Christmas racing less than a fortnight away and candidates for j Auckland leaving for the north early | next week, there was plenty of interesting work at Awapuni yesterday r.jorning, and particularly fine performances were recorded by L. Wilson's trio, Florence Mills, Quadroon, and Wagner, who registered the morning's best times over five and six furlongs. The course proper was available with the flags about 24 feet out and the going was fast. The weather was calm and dull.
Final ran three furlongs in 39sec without being extended. Silver River and Great Hope were partners over five furlongs. The former got the better of the start, but Great Hope had worked up to be on terms before the post was reached. They ran the distance in lmin 3 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38sec, and both went pleasingly. Oratory and Laughing Lass were associated in a five-iurlong scamper, and there was little between them at any stage. They registered 37 4-ssec for the first three, and lmin 3sec for the full journey. Noisy Night recorded lmin 19 2-ssec for six furlongs, the first half-mile taking 53 l-ssec. The Buzzer and The Bigot were worked over a mile, which took them lmin 46 3-ssec,which time they could have improved, as they appeared to be going very easily at the finish. Segra just beat Dunmanway, with a Centrepiece gelding beaten off, over three furlongs in 39 l-ssec. Prediction scampered over three in 38 4-ssec. Alby and Round Score were galloped a mile, the former finishing in front, after running lmin 46Jsec.
The Crooner beat Catalogue by half a length over five furlongs in lmin 4see, breaking 51sec for the last halfmile. They are due to leave for Auckland on Monday evening. L, Wilson's horses will go north the same evening.
Barcelona sprinted five furlongs, the last three in 39 2-ssec. Merry Ruler rah six furlongs in lmin 21 3-ssec, the last three in 40 l-ssec.
Wildflower and Tail Light were galloped over seven furlongs on the plough, the last six in lmin 18Jsee, with Wildflower showing the way. to* the post. ' ; The best five-furlong flutter of the morning was that of Florence Mills, who appears to be all the better for the race she had at Woodville. She started smartly, running the first furlong in 12 3-ssec, two in 25sec, three in 37 2-ssec, and the fullMislance in lmin 2 l-ssec.
Taumau was just in.front of Conveyer at the end of a mile, in lmin 46 4-ssec, the first five furlongs in. Imin 6sec. It was a good gallop. Old Surrey, after a slow beginning, ran a mile in lmin 46 2-ssec. He appeared to be slowing up a bit at the finish. The best six furlongs before breakfast was that of Quadroon and Wagner, who ran the distance in lmin 16 3-ssec, the first two furlongs in 24 l-ssec. Quadroon was a head in front at the Hunting Lore and the Iliad—Merit filly sprinted six furlongs in lmin 21sec :...'.'-
