EXTENSIVE DAMAGE
VICTORIA STREET FIRE
Stock and fittings at the warehouse of' Dowling, .Ltd., art dealers . and manufacturers' representatives, . were badly damaged by a fire which broke out on the third floor of Vick'ery's Building,. Victoria . Street, about 5.15 p.m. yesterday. , : r. , .",.. ■■' ;
Four engines from' the Central Fire Station and' one from Thorndon attended the blaze and, although the flames had a good hold when they arrived, the firemen soon had the outbreak suppressed.. So dense was the smoke that at-times the 'men•" we're forced to use respirators. Extensive' damage was done to the stock of Dowling, Ltd., by smoke and. water and the woodwork of the building < was badly burned. The second floor, occupied by Vickery Electrical Company, was slightly damaged and a little water found its way to the ground floor. :
