NO FRESH LABOUR

WAIANA PREFERENCE SHIP

v 'By Telegraph—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, December 3.

No fresh labour will be engaged for incoming vessels until the Waiana is manned with men not concerned in the original dispute, the Waiana having been declared a preference ship.

No work was done in connection with the Canopus today, and unless fresh labour is engaged tomorrow morning to work the Waiana, no work will be done in the Hamburg-Amerika steamer Gera, which arrived from New Orleans late tonight, or in the Rotorua, which is due from Liverpool about 8 o'clock in the morning.

When approached, the vice-president of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union, Mr. R. Jones, remarked that he was unable to make any statement until he had communicated with officials of the union at Wellington.

No reason has been offered by the union for the refusal of the men to work the Waiana on Thursday night, and the Port of Auckland Shipping and Stevedores' Association is at a loss to understand the. behaviour. In shipping circles, however, it is considered that the fact that waterside workers are paid on Thursdays is not without significance. Representatives of employers and employees conferred without result, and at noon the Shipping and Stevedores' Association issued a statement emphasising their determination to adhere to the rules of the bureau. Developments in the morning will depend on the attitude of the waterside workers when a call is made for fresh labour for the Waiana.
