FIFTY YEARS AGO

A telegram received by the "Post" on December 3, 1837,' says:—"lnformation has been received that the lonic arrived, all well, on Saturday last, so that the rumour which was circulated in Wellington as 'o being lost in the Channel, is entirely without foundation."

A communication from Sydney, published on .he same date, said:—"The German barque Livingstone, from Hamburg, arrived at the port yesterday. She reports 'laving rescued the crew of the British ship Mora, which was lost at sea whilst on a voyage from Hull to Natal with a cargo of timber."

Another paragraph said that "It is understood that there is every probability of the s.s. Takapuna being chartered privately for an excursion from Melbourne to the West Coast Sounds with a distinguished party of English and Australian colonists, including possibly two of the Australian Governors. Negotiations on the subject are now pending with the Union Company. This will not ■' interfere with the annual excursion from New Zealand ports to the Sounds."
