(By. Telegraph—Press Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, December 3,
In a heroic attempt at the rescue of an older comrade, a seven-year-old Maori boy, Tawa Sullivan, lost his life in the Waitotara River today. His courageous sacrifice''was in vain, for his companion, Whiti Tauri, aged nine, was also drowned.
■ The incident was notable for another brave rescue attempt by a 60-year-old man, George Tauri, grandfather of Whiti Tauri, whose effort was too late.
The boys were playing on the river bank when Tauri fell in. Sullivan immediately leapt into the water in an attempt to save him. The boys' predicament was seen and assistance arrived, but it was too late, for the boys were dead when taken from the water.
