ATHLETIC TRIALS
FOR EMPIRE GAMES
FURTHER NOMINATIONS
Further nominations are to hand for the Empire Games athletic trial meeting to be held in Wellington on Saturday week. Mr. A. C. Kitto, one of the selectors, stated this morning that certain athletes whose chances of selection were more than average were being specially invited and in their cases their expenses for the trip to Wellington would be met as far as was warranted by the gate receipts. Other participants were attending the meeting on the understanding that they were paying their own expenses.
Following are further nominations from various centres, with the names of those who are being specially invited:—
Otago.—C. McGregor, 100 yards and 220 yards; H. J. Tyrie, 440 yards; T. Allen, 880 yards and one 'mile; W. A. C. Pullar, one mile; A. R. Geddes, three and six miles; R. G. Pilling, broad jump and hop, step,- and jump; Miss B. Forbes, women's high jump; Miss D. Strachan, 100 yards and broad jump; Miss S. Oliphant, 100 yards and' high jump; H. D. Ramsay, 100 yards and 220 yards; G. Austin, marathon. Tapley was not available for nomination. Invitations were extended to the following: Tyrie, Allen, Pullar, Geddes, and Misses Forbes and Strachan.
Auckland.—H. Stenberg, A. J. Denz, and C. G. Goosman, 100 yards and 220 yards; A. J. Sayers, 220' and 440 yards; C. W. Bell, 880 yards; A. O. Dare and L. B. Clark, one mile; K. Crompton, three and six miles; P. T. Bowie, 120 yards' hurdles; H. D. Ball and F. A. Finlayson, 440 yards' hurdles; H. K. Brainsby, broad jump and hop, step, and jump; D. Chadwick, high jump; J. Ferguson, pole vault; J. G. Leckie, hammer and discus; K. D. Gillespie and C. P. Clegg, javelin; ■ Misses D. Lumley and J. George, women's 100 yards and 220 yards; Miss M. Mitchell, Javelin; Misses Mitchell and Munro, board jump; Misses Munro and Nelligan, 90 yards' hurdles. Invitations were extended to the following: Sayers, Bowie, Crompton, and Misses Lumley and Munro. Leckie will not come to Wellington, but will receive a further trial before two competent judges and the result'of his performance will be sent to the selectors. Gillespie and Clegg will be given . a further javelin-throwing trial in Auckland. Miss' Mitchell will undergo further javelin and broad jump trials at Auckland.
Hawke's Bay and Poverty Bay.— W. J. Fitzsimmons, 100 yards and 220 yards; G. Qurnn, 100 yards and 220 yards; F. Sharpley, 120 yards' hurdles; and Miss R. Tong, women's 90 yards' hurdle's. They have all received'invitations to attend. Others from that centre to be competing will be E. Phillips, R. Longley, and I. Bickerstaff.
The West Coast (North Island) trials will be held tonight and nominations should be in the hands of the selectors tomorrow. The Canterbury trial meeting, is to be held on 'Saturday and their nominations will be in -on the Sunday. 1 Three nominations have been received for the marathon team: G. Austin (Otago), A.' G. Hughes (Hawke's Bay), and L. Smyth (Auckland). As there is to be no trial marathon race the manner of selection is.still in doubt. The following were . the respective times of the nominees in their recent centre trials: 2 .hours ,52min 19 3-ssec; 2 hours 50min 55sec; 2 hours 56min ssec. The distance of the race was -twenty-six miles. Mr. Kitto stated that only a poor response had been made. to the Wellington centre's appeal for persons to billet visiting athletes.
