AUCKLAND, November 18.
tor attempting 'to obtain, from Jermyn John' Hudson, master of the steamer Port Hunter, £10 by falsely representing that he was a horse trainer named D. Gray, David Daniel Gray, aged 38, engineer, was convicted at the Magistrate's Court and remanded for sentence. ','..■■''' '
Hudson said Gray presented a letter purporting to be from Captain Steele, of the steamer Port Brisbane, stating that Gray had put him on to a winning horse and would do the same for him. Gray told witness that if he gave him £10, he would put him on a sure thing to win £15 on the next Saturday. Witness found that the signature did not tally with that of Captain Steele.
In a statement from the dock, Gray said he had put Steele arid others oh to winners. Surely there was nothing wrong with that. .
The Magistrate: No, but:when you make out that a letter comes from another captain that is getting into another man's confidence. You will be convicted on this charge. The police said nothing was known about Gray.., He was remanded for seven days for sentence.
