JAPAN'S WAR CHEST

The Japanese War Office announced recently that public donations to the army since' July 7, when the conflict with China began, had reached 16,000,000 yen. Army spokesmen said these voluntary contributions indicated that patriotism was running higher than in any of Japan's previous wars. Records showed the public contributed 2,918,000 yen during eighteen months of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95; 5,747,000 yen during eighteen months of the Russo-Japanese War, and 25,487,000 yen during the Manchurian campaigns of 1931-33.
