WINNERS AT ROTORUA

(By "Binocular.")

Although now a six-year-old, Little Anglia, winner of the Hunters' Hurdles at the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Clubs' Meeting on Saturday, has done very little racing. Last season she had but.the one outing, and had had only one previous start this term. However, the success was seemingly not unexpected, for she was favourite for the event. ■ . -.

Little Anglia is by that .•■■sire of good jumpers Little England, who was imported by the Waikato Hunt Club witn a view to improving the -jumping blood in the north, and he has certainly produced some splendid lumpers, Tudor being a fine advertisement for him. Her dam, Katuscha, was bred in 1925 by Mr. R, Hannon, being by Quin Abbey from the Leolantis mare Latfy Gwen, who traces back to imported Juliet. A younger rtiember of the family, Matoru (by Acre), has done well, and last season he won the Tararua and Belmont Handicaps at the-Wel-lington Racing Club's Spring Meeting, haying won twice in the south prior t.o being brought to this island.' -

Little Anglia was sold by her breeder to Mr. V. H. Nolan, of Cambridge, in July of last year, and she should now do good service" for her new owner, whose colours have previously been carried by Dv Maurier and Con Amore.

RACES IX PARTNERSHIP.

Another winner at -the Rotorua Meeting whose debut under silk was deferred till she was a five-year-old was Highland Queen, a bay mare by Spear Dance from Whitianga, who was by Absurd from the . Tasman mare Black Watch, and-tracing back to the imported mare Zenobia.

Highland Queen was bred by Mr. W. C. Ring, but her breeder disposed of her to Mr. R. O. McCabe in .1933, and the latter, in turn,' passed her on a few months later to Mr. F. Rose, of Tirau,: who now races her in partnership with! Mr. J. T. Young, of Te Awamutu, the1 partnership having been .registered in August last. As Highland Queen had had only two outings prior to Saturday, the joint owners have received an early return. • . ' - The records show that Mr! Rose has previously been represented on. the Turf by Heremai, Knight rif Australia, and Beatall, but in each instance the horses have been run in partnership with others, Messrs. Young and A. Cook .being concerned where-Knight of Australia was involved; while Mr. E. R. Worth is interested in Beatall. Mr. Young raced Actium on his own account.

ANOTHER LATECOMER,

The story of deferred debuts to. the racing game can be carried still further, for Mio Fratollo, the winner of the Haeremai Highweight : Handicap, did not have her first race in public till she was a six-year-old, and she had had only two starts prior to Jier, successful outing at Rotorua. As was instanced in .the :- case of Highland Queen, Mio Fratollo passed through : several hands before she figured on the Turf. She was bred by ,Mr. B. Russo, her. dam being the Merry Moment mare Merry Sara, the dam of Mia Stella, but she : was acquired in 1936 by Mr. A. Russo, : who, 15 months later sold her t0.Mr.,8.-E. S. Scown, • ot-, Otorohanga. Thus yet another owner made an auspicious start with his representative,; which is apparently the first he has raced.
