STRUCK A REEF
MOTOR-SHIP NIKAU
NO APPARENT DAMAGE
(By Telegraph—Prere Association.)
BLENHEIM, This Day,
While feeling her way up Queen Charlotte Sound in heavy rain at 3 o'clock this morning, the motor vessel Nikau, of 97 tons, ran on a reef as she turned The Snout, a long point at the entrance to Ficton Harbour about three miles from the wharf. The vessel sustained no apparent damage and got off-the reef on the rising tide at 7.45 a.m. under her own power and with the assistance of a powerful launch proceeded to Picton. She berthed at 8.20 a.m.
The Nikau, which is owned by Levin and Company, is commanded by Captain A. Eden, Wellington, and has a complement of ten hands. A preliminary examination indicates that no harm was done to the plates, and this afternoon the ship will resume her journey from Tarakohe to Wellington with a - cargo of cement.
The Nikau is a frequent visitor to Picton in the course of coastal trading in the vicinity of Cook Strait. The mishap occurred when visibility was extremely poor.
