NEW TESTAMENT STUDIES

RECOMMENDATION TO CHAIR

AUCKLAND, This Day.

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church has nominated to the Synod of Otago and Southland for appointment to the Chair of New Testament Studies the name of the Rev. John A. Allan, M.A. , - • ■•

Mr. Allan has had a distinguished academic record. In 1916 he gained a University Entrance Scholarship, and in 1920 graduated 8.A., gaining a Special War- Senior Scholarship in Philosophy. In 1924 he graduated M.A. with first class honours in Philosophy. In 1924, after study in ' New College, Edinburgh, he graduated with the Honours Diploma in Theology. He was awarded the Cunningham Fellowship, New College, Edinburgh. He has served the New Zealand Church with acceptance in the congregations of Seatoun, Wellington, and Riccarton, Christchurch, and at present is minister of the Mount Eden Congregation, Auckland.

The principal-emeritus of New College, Edinburgh, Dr. Alex. Martin, writing of Mr. Allan, says, "Alike as a student and. a man, Mr. Allan commended himself to us greatly. His special bent was towards linguistic and allied study, but he left us admirably equipped all round for the ministry, and not only so but with the makings in him, in my serious judgment, of a scholar and a teacher."

Mr. Allan will take up his new work in the Theological Hall, Dunedin, in 1938. • ■
