INVERCARGILL, November 16.

Heavy rain which began at Invercargill late this afternoon* and spread inland during the evening gave Southland a much welcomed soaking after the most prolonged period of drought experienced for some years. In all country districts the need of rain was clearly evident.

The rainfall recorded at Invercargill for August, September, and October amounted to 5.40 inches, compared with 13.77 inches for the same period last year.' _^____
