WALKING

ATTEMPT AT REVIVAL

CLUB PROPOSAL

In earlier years' walking events claimed much attention in Wellington, but hot so now or for some few years, past. Steps are being taken in Wellington, however, to revive interest in competitive walking on track and' road, including, if sufficient interest : is evinced, the old Hutt Road walk for w'meh it is stated a cup is held by the Athletic Club.

Mr. D^ C. Pedersen, well known as a member of the Brooklyn Harrier Club, is the organiser of a movement to form the Amalgamated Walking Club.; The club, he points out, is to be purely, a.nominal one, in that members of other athletic .clubs would still belong to their respective clubs and compete under their own colours for those clubs. ■ They would join the Amalgamated--Walking Club simply for the purposes, of combined training and competition and to get sound advice and coaching in the art of competitive walking. , ' ' ;'. ■ • j A suggested plan of operations' xvouia be: a wall of 3, 5, or 10 miles every Saturday as,the members felt fit .or trained' to .do,, .with Wednesday as a midweek training night. On, the Sat?; ur days ..when, an athletic meeting'was being heid and where a.walk, was m--luded in' the programme, they • could participate in this ■ event, but' \Vhen there was nor a walk.included in^. the prpgramrrie' and 'trie sports were being held at trie' trajning; ground a^ flataitai, th,ey.couW hold their, trainingI.,*?>lk after the sports' meeting.,was pver,. r Training lias been arranged for 2 p.m. at Hataitai1 every ■SS'tuT'dayV Snd at 7 p.m. every Wednesday. ; The scheme was launched on Saturday,, four men starting, but about a dozen have promised to attend the training night on Wednesday. "There are several purely walking clubs operating in England and Australia," said Mr. Pedersen, "and I have hopes that this scheme may develop in that direction. -I realise, that it may take time, but I am. sure that with keen organisation and some publicity it may attract quite a few."
