SPORTING
ON TRENTHAM TRACKS
LEVIN CANDIDATES
THIS MORNING'S GALLOPING
(By "Rangatira.")
Although Trentham stables will have over a score of horses at the Levin Meeting on Saturday, there was very little serious galloping on the tracks this morning. The plough provided splendid gom/;, but several of the trainers were not back from Riccarton and most of the horses are being reserved for their final trials later on in the week. The weather was perfect in the early hours, but later it clouded over with threat —or perhaps better expressed at present—promise of rain. The only Levin candidates to go against the watch were Gabriel, Free Gold, Alloa, Fairy Dale, Galteemore, Jewish Lad, Kinloch, and Camilla Horn. Pace work was the assignment of the others. Gabriel (D. W. Bush), with a lot more weight, was no match for Revival (R. Hawes) over five furlongs, the last half-mile taking Revival 51 3-ssec. Gabriel has reecntly been taken over on lease by Mrs. W.,Hall, of • Wellington, and he is now being trained b£ T. Yates, who prepared Rona Bay for her numerous successes last season. ■ . Free Gold (R. D. Gerrard), going alone, ran half a mile in 53sec. Though no final decision will be made till T. R. George returns from the south, this gelding may not accept the compliment1 paid him by the Levin handicapper. Alloa (M. Reardon)-and Trebor (W. Doyle) were partners over half a-.mile in 49 3-ssec, which was the best time of the morning. Alloa, who had the worst of the weights, was not forced out, and Trebor finished on to beat him by a neck. Both horses look.improved, particularly Trebor, who did not do too well for a few weeks. Fairy Dale (S. R. Farland) and Galteemore (Doyje) were together for most of their seven furlongs, but the mare made a last run that landed her half a length in front at the post, the time being- lmin 32 2-ssec, with the last half-mile in 52sec. Fairy Dale will probably start in the hack seven "at Levin in preference to the maiden event, which is over only five furlongs, and in which the stable also has Alloa. • . Jewish Lad (P. Burgess), who is now in A. Goodman's charge, ran half a mile alone in 49 4-ssec. This time was equalled by Deficit (S. Wilson), whose next racing will be at Feilding.' Kinloch (A; Sim) took 51sec. : Camilla Horn (Bush) ran a good six furlongs for a hurdler in lmin 17 3-5 sec, the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. E. Burgess will be on the mare on Saturday, while Bush will ride Polabian, whose work this morning was only solid pacing. ■.-..'. ■.■■'. ■ Others to gallop included Debham and Accomplice, who ran six furlongs in lmin 20sec, the last half-mile in 52sec, Dissipation,. . whose half-mile took 52sec, and Haupongi, who traversed seven furlongs in lmin 45sec. Southern Blood, an acceptor for Levin, was not noticed on the track, and as his usual pilot, E. Burgess, has taken the mount on. Camilla Horn,, it is possible that he will be missing tlje meeting.' Rejected, who worked sore, will definitely not make the trip. The others are all expected to be on hand. Few riding engagements have yet to be settled. The trainers who, have.been south returned by last night's boat, and the piloting of the Levin candidates will be arranged' during the next day or so. C. T. Wilson is coming north for the meeting, and his rides will include Cricket and Sigurd,.
