EFFECT OF AMALGAMATIONS

The Local Government (Amalgamation Schemes) Bill was considered by the executive of the Wellington Ratepayers' Association, which carried the following resolution:— _ "Whilst agreeing in principle with the need for some amalgamation of local bodies such as/river boards and certain county councils, the utmost care should be taken in the review of any suggestions for the amalgamation of boroughs with cities. Taking Wellington as an example, over the past twenty years she has absorbed several boroughs, thus necessitating heavy expenditure for development work in new:; suburbs. Whilst this course may have been justified in cases like Miramar, Onslow, ana Karori, it would be economically unsound to extend our boundaries, and ratepayers in Wellington who are now heavily burdened would strongly protest against any suggestion of amalgamation with adjacent boroughs, as they are still feeling the strain of meeting the commitments necessitated by the inclusion in the; city of the,;bproughs referred to. The city area,-, in the opinion of this association, has-now reached its ultimate, economic boundary."
