ENGLAND'S EIGHT
FOR EMPIRE GAMES
NEW TYPE OF BOAT
(Received November 9, 11 a.m.) ■ LONDON, November 8. Despite the non-inclusion of University representatives, whom it is impossible to invite because of the boat race, England's Empire Games eight is regarded as the best seen in England for seven years. The positions of the crew are:—J. F, Burroughs (Thames), bow; R. C. Hai> man (Thames); D. C. Kingsford (Lean* der); J. Turnbull (Cambridge); P. H. Jackson (London); J.N. Sturroek, caj> tain (Leander); R. Hambridge (London); B. Si Beasley (London), .stroke; T. Raeve (London), cox. . The average weight is half a pound under 13st. Hambridge and Turnbull are Australians. J. Beresford, the coach, thinks the crew is greatly superior to the London combination which was successful at the Melbourne Centenary. The crew is taking a new type o£ boat, not previously seen in Australia, with figure-eight cross-bracing to eliminate twisting and centre-whip under strain. It will also use new oars with braced- backs to eliminate whip after entering the water.- , !
