EMPIRE GAMES

ATHLETIC CONTESTS

LOVELOCK'S FORECAST

(Received November 9, 11.30 a.m.)

LONDON, November 8,

Comparing Britain's team for the Empire Games with those of the Dominions, J. E. Lovelock, in an exclusive article foi\ the Associated Press, expresses the opinion that the British champion, C. B. Holmes, will take the sprint title, his hardest opponents being the Australian Yates and the South Africans Grimbeck and Vandicar.

The likeliest winner of the long jump is the Canadian W. Brown in the absence of his negro compatriot Sam Richardson. ,

The quarter-mile British recordholder, W. Roberts, should be suited to the Australian conditions against the strong opposition of Wylde (Scotland), D. Shore (South Africa), Loaring (Canada), Irwin (Australia), and Sayers (New Zealand). The probable half-mile winner is the Welsh champion, J. W. Alford, from J. C. Stothard, of Scotlana, the New Zealander V. P. Boot, and the Australian Backhouse. The likeliest milers are the New Zealander W. A. C. Pullar, and the South African M. J. Wessels.

B. L. Ward (Britain) should be a certainty in the yiree-mile race, in which he will be supported by his compatriot, L. H. Weatherill, who is also to concentrate on the six-mile event. The polytechnic 4 marathon-runner A. J. Norris has the best chance in the marathon event, his most dangerous, oppc .ent being the South African Gibson. The most outstanding high jumpers are the Australian Metcalfe and the South African Thacker.
