RATING ON CROWN LAND

The following remit to, the next Municipal Conference, moved by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews), was carried unanimously by the Lower Hutt Borough Council last evening:—"That the Rating Act be amended so as to make the Crown liable for rates in respect of lands and buildings of which it is the owner where it has acquired land for the purpose of embarking on under^kings in competition with private enterprise,, and particularly in the ' case of housing schemes necesesitating the supply of borough services such as drainage and sewerage, and the maintenance of roads and footpaths, and the provision"of street lighting'to land in respect of which the Crown pays no rates in the case of untenanted land and a proportion only where the property is tenanted."
