MILK FOR SCHOOLS
PROCURING SUPPLIES
The fact that about 126,000 school children -in the Dominion were being regularly supplied with'milk was mentioned' by the Minister- of Health (the Hon. P. Fraser) during the discussion on the Health Department Estimates in the House of' Representatives -yesterday 'afternoon.' He said that the scheme was being : rapidly extended throughout New Zealand and he wished to thank members :of Parliament and the local committees for assisting the Health-Department in its-efforts.
It had been much more difficult to get the milk than had been anticipated, said the Minister. There were the questions of.tuberculin-tested herds and adequate'pasteurisation to deal with, and in the .circumstances the' success achieved had been very satisfactory. It was remarkable that in a place like Palmerston North, ,a centre flowing ■with milk, so much difficulty had been experienced in obtaining supplies that Massey College had had to undertake the job. , The: winter 'supplies were difficult to obtain, and to get people to supply milk ; all the year round the job, had to- be commercially worth while. He;;was not blaming anyone, but tie,.wasi saying that:the work had beea much'more difficult than was expected and the results reflected'tKa greatest credit on those responsible.
