Court Lady Glasgow A.O.F. Dance.
An enjoyable evening was passed recently when Court Lady Glasgow of the Ancient Order of Foresters held one of their popular dances. The hall was filled to capacity and all present had a most enjoyable time. The committee consisted of Mesdames Vine, Morris, Tester, Lawton, Hoy* and Misses Nelson,' Joan Kivell, Grace Morris, Elsa Purdey, Evelyn Tansey, A. Parker, Blanch Carr. Mr. Watson made a very capable M.C. Winners of, the Monte Carlo were Mr. and Mrs. Raundwaith and the Lucky Spot Miss Revell and Mr. Guide. Among the' visitors present were Mr. and Mrs. I Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins, Mr. and Mrs. Sinclair, Mrs. Watson, Misses Betty Purdey, Olga Robertson, Dwight, Morris, Davis; Messrs. Ruben Wright, B. Gleeson, Taylor, Adam, T. Hemingway, Taite, Pattison, Hodge, Peacock. The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" brought a very happy evening to a close. Forthcoming Bazaar. There was a large gathering of ' people at a most successful social afternoon in aid of Roseneath St. Barnabas Church. An interesting talk was given by Mrs. Thornly on her visit to the East. Songs were given by Mrs. C. Neil, accompanied by Mrs. Martin, and piano items by Mrs. McKendrick. A novel competition caused great amusement, the prize-winners being Captain Galloway and Master Graham Broughton. ~The judges were Mrs. Angus and the Rev, .E. M. McLevje.' After the competitions a dainty afternoon tea was served. Miss Edgar presented Mrs. McLevie with a lovely posy on behalf of the hostesses, Mes--1 dames L. H. Angus, C. B. Coad, Wilson. Downes, and Miss Sue Edgar. The Rev. E. M. McLevie thanked the hostesses and all present for their help and attendance. Taita Women's Institute. There was a fair attendance at the usual meeting of the Taita Women's Institute, Mrs. Foster, president, being in the chair. A welcome was given to - a number of visitors, and an announcement made of £ social evening to be held in conjunction with the hall committee. Mrs. Young read her report on the half-yearly council meeting and it was decided to hold the next institute meeting on th; last Tuesday in November and the Christmas tree on the first Saturday in December. The competition for next meeting is to be a child's frock costing no more than 3s 6d. After afternoon tea had been served a musical programme arranged by Mrs. I. Taylor was very much ; enjoyed. A play reading by the" Drama Circle was a pleasing addition to the programme. The singing of the National Anthem concluded a pleasant afternoon. Thanks for Gifts. Radiant Health. An interesting lecture entitled 'Tha Truth about Fasting and Diet" was gjyen recently by Mr. R. T. McLean at , the Radiant Health and Psychology > Club. Mr. McLean explained the necesf. ; sity of understanding the effects of fasting, and said that a prolonged fast should only be > taken under strict supervision. How the mental, physical, and spiritual outlook of a person could be entirely altered by the use of correct foods, and a properly-balanced diet was also explained by the speaker. , The lecture was listened to with great ' interest by an. appreciative audience, who accorded the speaker a hearty vote of thanks. Pre-wedflinf Parties. ' Several1 pre-wedding parties- have been given recently for Miss Margaret ' Vernon in honour of her approaching marriage to Mr. A. D. Long. ■ Among the hostesses were Miss Betty Sargisson and Miss Griffiths, and Mesdames Dotson, Downey, and Moug combined in giving an evening party at which about 60 guests were entertained. Mr. and Mrs. Mattje, Mr. and Mrs,MJurden, Miss Betty Tunley, and Mrs. ,"■&' Reid gave items, and dancing wasiUMO enjoyed. Many/ useful gifts were brought for the bride-elect. A number of guests were entertained recently by Mrs. George Turner at her home at Lower Hutt in honour of Miss Queenie Wells, whose marriage will take place shortly. The hostess wore a tunic frock of seagreen taffeta with a corsage spray of ' anemones. The annual bazaar promoted by the various organisations attached to St. Peter's Church will be h'ejfd. on Tuesday, November 9, in the 'schoolroom. The bazaar will be opened by Mrs. Peter Fraser at three o'dock, and will be continued in the evening* when an entertainment will tie 'given. A feature will be the mystery parcels to be distributed at nine o'clock.
