BONFIRES ON PETONE BEACH

One of the features of Guy Fawkes Day is the number of bonfires on the Petone beach, and they attract, people from the city and other parts of the Hutt Valley. This year there were a number of large fires which made a spectacular show and were -watched by thousands of people. The juveniles enjoyed themselves in the usual way with fireworks. Fires around the hills burned brightly, but they were all well controlled and the Petone brigade did not receive any calls.

The Lower Hutt Fire Brigade had a call to a gorse fire on the hillside at the end of Seaview Road, at about 8.30 p.m., but as neither houses nor bush were endangered, the flre .was allowed to burn itself out. It made a spectacular blaze for a couple of hours. With this exception the brigade, which was standing by all evening, was not called upon.
