LEAGUE OF MOTHERS
ANNUAL REPORT
The League of Mothers does not inn tend to hold a conference this year, but will have a meeting, of the Dominion executive, to which the; provincial presidents havebeen invited, and which will be held this.week. The report states that there are now; 94 branches, 7274 attending members, ' 6210! financial members, and 107?newmembers. While being pleased'at the large number of .new. members, the executive looks forward to' ;,ai; »tUI greater increase in the"near The Wellington-Upper Huttbrattch is ; a new one, the formation of'ifrhich has given much pleasure. The lighthouse branches again thanfe Miss Mary-Rich-mond for her sympathetic work, which is of the greatest moment to such lonely women. The Maori and scattered branches have been under, the care of Mrs. Stanley Harris, and the members 1 show a great keenness. ' In. spite of many difficulties which arose over the production of the I calendars," there was a gratifying pro--1 fit from, them, and those which, will be issued this year have a design which, was chosen by Lady Alice Ferguson. Miss Richmond has had the collaboration of the Dominion president and secretary in the production of .the magazine. Miss Lorimer has been, another tower of strength, and Mesdames Marshall, Norman, and Wood : are also thanked for their help. ■ Much regret is expressed that Mrs. G. H. Fleming, Dominion secretary andi ; treasurer of the magazine, has felt her- . self .obliged to resign the position, and cordial thanks are given to her for all her work. Mrs. Trail! was her,;,kind and efficient helper during the year. Following are the figures-of ' this magazine circulation (last year's figures) are in parentheses);—Auckland^': 762 : (707); Wellington, 1137 (1170); Cftago, 312 (312); Southland, 56 (60); Maori ancl scattered branches, 26 (23); lighthouse i members, 20 (17); individual subscribers, 39 (35). The financial statement shows an increase of £16 12s 7(1 over last year's balance. •?' During the year the New Zealand 1 League of Mothers cancelled affiliation with the Scottish Mothers' Union," and are..now .affiliated to the Scottish, League of Wives and Mothera, whose aims and objects more closely resemble the aims and objects of the,, league o£ "New^Zealin*. 'Information^ regarding links'with the new-union 'will be forthcoming later. Mrs. John Reid, Dunedin provincial president, had unfortunately to resign. During her term of office, she workedi untiringly for the league in Dunedin. All workers parted from h«r with regret, and will miss her visits to meet* ings of the Dominion council. New appointments include the following:—Mrs. Walter Ross, a former pro* vincial president, has taken Mrs. Reid's place; Mrs. Stanley Harris was appointed in October, 1936,*a5. Dominion assistant secretary, and the executiva was glad to welcome as a,new member one whose league experience is sa valuable. During the year the Dominion presi* dent visited Auckland, and later, with .the Dominion secretary/visited Riverton, Invercargill, Baldutha, and Dun« edin. They were warmly welcomed! at every place. They have also visited the Wairarapa and branched in Wellington. Mrs. Wall hopes to go to Auckland in October to attend -meeting* there. Thanks are given to all.the officer* of the league for the wonderful worli they have done during the year. Con* gratulations are given to the provincial presidents and secretaries on the increase 'of membership in every p»o* vincc, and thanks to all members foi* their enthusiastic support and loyal co-operation which makes possible tha work of the League. The Karori branch of the League of Mothers held its pleasant monthly afternoon recently at the local Methodist Schoolroom. It was the last meeting) for this year, the next one being arranged for February. ' There was a good attendance, and the meeting opened with the League hymn and prayer, and then Mr*. Foster gave a very interesting talk,on the Cub movement, and- spoke on the aims and general outline of the preparation of little boys for their enrolment in the Scouts when they are old enough, Mrs. Hartnell (Ngaio) seng two delightful songs, which the members heartily applauded. . Mrs. Cruttenden presented a muchappreciated one-act play-reading sketch! entitled "The Stepmother," assisted by Mi's. Stakes, Mrs. Wainwrighl, and Mrs. Rutherford.
Mrs. Gunn (president) presented ail artists with floral tributes. <
