CO-OPERATION OF U.S.A.

PLEA WELCOMED

NO INTENTION TO LEAD

United Press Association—By Electric Tele-

graph—Copyright.

NEW YORK, November 2.

The Washington correspondent of the "New York Times" says that Mr. Eden's plea for British and American co-operation in the Far Eastern crisis is welcomed as a promising background to the Nine-Power Conference. There are no indications that the United States intends to take the lead, but Britain's apparent preparedness for equal co-operation is reassuring.

Earlier reactions were most unfavourable. Mr. Eden's speech was even described as an act of incredible stupidity. Subsequently it was discovered that the news agency reports from London were incorrect.

The misunderstanding arose not from the direct words of Mr. Eden, but from an interpretation^ made of a Press agency report that he had indicated that the United States had taken the initiative in convoking the NinePower Conference. Apparently after much conferring across the Atlantic the matter was straightened out.

The "New York Times" was compelled to throw out its Washington dispatch on the 'subject and substitute another, in which it was carefully explained, "Mr. Eden, of course, did not suggest that the initiative in the convocation of the Nine Powers came from the United States."

It is no secret that President Roosevelt at all costs does not wish the impression to prevail in Japan that the United States is leading a movement against her.
