MELBOURNE, November 2,
By a brilliant win in the Melbourne Cup before an enormous crowd at Flemington on the second day of the Victoria Racing Club's Meeting today, The Trump gained his sixth successive win of the season and added to his laurels the most coveted trophy of racing in the Southern Hemisphere. Both horse and rider received a wonderful ovation from the crowd, which unhesitatingly recognised the cuunination of a magnificent series of achievements. .. , Ashley Reed's riding was a big factor towards the success. He had his mount well placed, throughout and took every advantage of an opening on the rails. The Trump is trained by Stan Reid, who, like the jockey, is a former New Zealander. The owner, Mr. E. Eccles, had his first win in the Cup, although eta two previous occasions he had gained second place with Yarramba and The Cypher. The only other occasion on which one horse has won both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in the one season was in woe, when Poseidon gained the honour. The Trump's time was only a quarter of a second outside Wotan's Australasian record. There was a sensation at tne star.,, Sir Regent being left half a furlong. Willie Win was responsible for a great effort. He looked the winner until The Trump put in an overpowering run Sarcherie, who was second to Peter Pan in 1934, and second to Marabou in 1935, again had to be content with a minor placing after leading into the straight. Allunga finished strongly into fourth place. Wotan, Mala, International, and Jack Homer were never dangerous. Hua was well placed throughout, but tired In the run home. '■. . v „„ _ Bridge of Mar, raced by the V.R.C. chairman, Mr. Alan Currie, led always in the hurdle race and outclassed his opponents. St. Fox and Restford finished well, but had no chance with the winner. .;'-.«. Parodier finished well to win the Railway Highweight by a narrow margin. Judean and Finch also finished well, but Royal Quex was never dangerous. •■■■■■ In an exciting finish-In the Mimosa Stakes/Bush Bee just held'off Brazen Duchess. Jewel, who tired, beat Homily for third. Homily collided with Gay Romance at the start, but finished well; Bush Bee now has had two' wins and a second in three starts. Seymour gave a brilliant display of fencing in the steeplechase. Mid Acre was never dangerous."1 _ Mohican, who scored a comfortable win in'the'Yaii Yean Stakes, has been very consistent'this season. Evening Mist and Ramdin finished well; but Sir Simper and Metro ran poor races. Bellevue, who was last early, made up ground. ■"'•■/. ' Resultswere:— CUP HURDLE RACE, £700; 2 miles.
