RETIRED PUBLISHER KIDNAPPED (Reaeived October 20, 9 ajn.) CHICAGO, October 19. G-men revealed that a ransom of 50,000 dollars was paid in vain in an effort to obtain the return of Charles Ross, aged 72, a retired publisher of greeting cards, who was kidnapped on September 25. The opinion is expressed that Ross, who was a sufferer from heart disease, is dead. An 'active search has started. The kidnappers published a number of ransom bills.
