SEVERE FIGHTING

SUCCESS AND COUNTERSUCCESS The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consul from Nanking last night:— "The severest fighting took place north of Wentsaopang, which changed hands three times. A whole Japanese division was thrown in on a frontal attack. To lure the Japanese, the Chinese commander withdrew in the centre, holding the right and left flanks firmly, thus forming a pocket. Sixty Japanese surrendered, and the majority were killed. • "The Chinese air force made four raids on the Japanese position at Yengtzepoo, ' Chapei, and Kiangwan last night during the moonlight. There were heavy enemy losses. One Japanese*warship was bombed and Japanese air 'field stores suffered severe damage. "Japanese bombs destroyed more than 30 farm houses in the Hungjao village, the Japanese airmen machinegunning the helpless countryfolk. "The Wangtien, Yehzah, and Changan stations on the Shanghai-Hangchow-Ningpo railway were bombed, damaging the platforms, private houses, and passenger coaches, and 32 people were killed. and wounded. Such wanton destruction is without any military significance."
