CONCERN ABOUT INCREASE The reason for the sharp rise in the number of hospital patients, as indicated by recent figures relating to the Wellington Hospital, was the basis of a notice of question given in the House of Representatives yesterday by Mr. E. J. Howard (Government, Christchurch South), on behalf of Mr. Speaker (the Hon. W. E. Barnard). He asked whether the Minister of Health (the Hon. P. Fraser) had noticed the following extract from a statement by the chairman of the Wellington Hospital Board, published in the "Evening Post":—"The increase in demand for hospital accommodation is shown by the following:—Daily average number of patients throughout the year—l 932-33, 498; 1933-34, 534; 1934-35, 572; 1935-36, 622; 1936-37, 689. For the past six months the daily average has been over 700. It will be seen from these figures that a gradual increase has been maintained, the average being 47 per year." Mr. Barnard asked whether this disquieting increase in the number of Wellington Hospital patients was typical of the Dominion, and what were the reasons for so sharp a rise in the num- ■ ber?
