HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
' The House of Representatives met at 2.30 o'clock this afternoon. Mr. C. H, Chapman (Government, Wellington North) gave notice to ask the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the .Hon. D. G. Sullivan) if he would made regarding the price of flsh. He said that since meat prices had increased fish prices had gone up, and suggested that probably a schedule could be drawn up. Replying to a question asked by Mr. R. A. Wright (Independent,. Wellington Suburbs), the Minister in charge of Housing (the Hon. W. Nash) said:— (1) A ballot was held for the State rental houses under construction' and nearing completion at Miramar, Lower Hutt, and Johnsonville, and applications received after the advertised closing date were not admitted. (2) All eligibly applicants were admitted to the ballot, which was conducted on , the basis of the established procedure for land ballots. Special provision was made for two tenants who were displaced in another part of the city through the recent acquisition of land by the Government for educational purposes. "Jt is not intended that all specialist work should be eliminated from cadet training, but it is desirable that such trailing should be of general value to cadets as future citizens. In addition, it is intended to enlarge the syllabus of physical training," stated the Minister of Defence (the Hon. P. Jones) in reply to a. question asked .by Mr. J. Hargest (National, Awarua). WAIRARAPA DEVIATION. Transport facilities in the Wairarapa was the subject of a question asked by Mr. J. Robertson (Government, Masterton) and answered by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple). . Mr. Robertson asked the Minister whether he would make a statement as to when .it is the Government's in- ; tentlon to proceed with the deviation : of the Wairarapa railway line in order to remove the heavy handicap now im- 1 posed on the Wairarapa district by the j inadequacy of present transport faci- 1 lities over the Rimutaka hill? Mr. Semple replied; "As .far back as 1923 an exhaustive report was prepared by the Public Works Department setting out alternative routes to ] give access to the Wairarapa, and this ■ report, together with a recent report prepared by the Railways Department, has been submitted to the Govern- ' ment. Careful consideration is being given to these reports, and an announcement will be made as soon . rs possible." j (Proceeding.) ,
