ASKED TO EXPLAIN

DUTCH GOVERNMENT

ATTACKS ON JAPANESE

FISHING BOATS

TOKIO, October 17.

The Foreign Office Spokesman, Mr. Tatsuo Kawai, said that an official explanation was being demanded from the Netherlands Government of the incidents m the Dutch East Indies, where a warplane machine-gunned Japanese fishing boats. Japanese consular reports showed that while off Sumatra on September 30 a plane from the warship Flores riddled the Tokuei Maru with 700 bullets, killing two of the crew and wounding two. The suspicion that the vessel was poaching was found to be groundless and it was released on October 9.

The next incident occurred off Natuna Archipelago on October 9, when a plane machine-gunned the Taishin Maru, wounding two. Such action was unwarranted because the vessel was only getting, water. However, it is still being detained. ,
