FIT WHEN PASSED
MAYOR DEFENDS VEHICLE
TESTS
Six-monthly examination of motor vehicles, though worth while, was not any guarantee of fitness in the interim, said the Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) at the City Council yesterday afternoon, when referring to the comments made by the Coroner (Mr. E. Gilbertson, J.P.) upon a recent accident.
"The Coroner, in giving his verdict, said: "I am not prepared to comment on the lack of attention of the driver, but I am prepared to comment on the disgraceful condition rtt the brakes. Thn'e Is scm&lhing wrong with the authority fesuing the certificate of fitness."
The authority, said Mr. Hislop, was in this case the Wellington City Council. The certificate was issued five Months before the accident, and it was quite possible for a vehicle to be out of order a week after examination. He knew of one case where brakes failed to operate efficiently a fortnight after examination, though fit when passed. The. city's inspectors were quite competent, and vehicles were thoroughly inspected.
