RAVAGES OF GRASS GRUB
Some alarm has heen caused among farmers in various parts of. South Canterbury by the ravages of> the grass grub, .states a Temuka correspondent. Various methods to rid.the-grass lands of this pest have been used, but to little* avail. It is well known; that the beetles of the grub and the moths. of the porina caterpillar fly at night, and measures will shortly be taken to wage war on the pests in earnest It has been suggested by' an agriculturist of much experience in South Canterbury that farmers should combine in burning large areas from the Waitaki River to the Rangitata River to.attract and destroy, the pest by the widespread fires, and it is probable that this suggestion will be carried out.< / Farmers hope that the proposal will be a success, as thousands of acres. of grassland are rendered useless through the action of the grub, and these have to be resown, causing the owner much trouble and expense. »
