LAST AMONG HACKS

PETERSHAM'S GOOD FORM

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, October 12. The form of Petersham in the hack class and the brilliant win of Silver Streak with nearly three stone above the minimum in the Telegraph Handicap were outstanding features at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. Petersham, who is running out his hack nominations, drew away from his field each day in grand style, and he should do well in open company. Silver Streak has been rating well over all distances of late, and he must be considered a New Zealand Cup • prospect with only 7.9. . With T. Hobbs's team capturing four races at the meeting and J. Ross's one, Oamaru easily produced the most winners. Petersham (twice), Silver Streak, and Pink Bond won for Hobbs, and Queen Dorothy won for Ross. Compensate was easily the best of the two-year-olds. He carried 9.0 like a seasoned horse on Saturday and stuck to his guns in great .style. Pmk Bond, on the score of condition, was rated as the worst in the field that paraded for the second day, but_ she surprised by beating the opposition for speed at the finish. Ortyx was on her toes and may now be feeling the effects of her early effort at Ashburton. Great Baby went a disappointing race on Saturday compared with her showing in the McLean Stakes. Toro-Koura, trained by E. J. Ellis at Washdyke, will be heard of later on. Mosgiel Park provided the winner of each of the hurdle races, for Travenna does all his schooling there, and Fireguard is trained by D. P. Wilson on the same track.

The Invercargill-owned and trained hurdler Burwood showed up well for a novice and should be an early winner over fences.

Valmarch stopped at the business end of both his races, but the Spring Stakes at Timaru on Saturday should suit him better.

Galleon had a change of riders on Saturday, being ridden by. W. F. Ellis, a son of F. W. Ellis, the trainer of the horse. It was the boy's first race. Galleon was in the rear early and made up little ground over the concluding stages, the track appearing to be too fast for him to reveal his best.

Thermidor finished on in both her races and may be found winning over more ground in the future.
