ARABOA IMPROVED

DUNEDIN'S WASHDYKE HAND

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, This Day,

The South Canterbury Spring Meet; ing, which opens tomorrow, has drawn Combat (trained by D. McDonald), Vallock and Pink Robe (G. McKay), and Our Pal and Araboa (F. Shaw) from Wingatui stables. D, P. Wilson, who trains at Mosgiel Park, is also taking Fireguard and Atalanta Lass.

Combat, a half-brother by Rosenor to the McLean Stakes winner Compensate, and the first of the progeny of Late Note, has not yet raced up to expectation, though he looks the part. Vallock, who is engaged in the same race, has been another disappointment, but he shaped fairly well in a gallop before the local meeting, and the distance is in his favour. Atalanta Lass had her first race as a three-year-old when produced in the Kaikorai Handicap on Saturday, and, though she was not sighted early in the piece, she finished up about ninth. Our Pal, another competitor for the same race, is a two-year-old son of Nightmarch and Palantua, who had his first start last Saturday, but was slow away and ran greenly. Pink Robe may run another good race in the Kerrytown Hack. She galloped two solid races* at Dunedin.

Araboa, who is hardening up in condition, was worked yesterday morning over five furlongs on the sand plough and covered the distance in lmin ssec, the last three in 38 3-ssec. After his two solid races last week he hardly needed the gallop, but he was not ridden out. He is being asked to sprint tomorrow, and if he goes out like he did at Wingatui last week he may keep them busy. F. Shaw will not be returning to Wingatui after the South Canterbury Meeting, for he is going on to Wellington with Ortyx and Araboa, The filly was a bit on her toes last week.

Compensate has not lightened up any as a result of his two races last week. He has some important engagements ahead, which include the Canterbury Champagne Stakes and Welcome Stakes.

Violenta's forelegs. filled after a gallop prior to the Dunedin Meeting, and she will probably be retired to the stud. Golden King is another cot case, and his racing days are practically over. WILLIE WIN'S RIDER (United Press Association — By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received October 13, 2.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Tooley Street and Red Manfred are candidates for the Cup and Namakia for the Welter at the Cranbourne Meeting tomorrow. Old Rowley arrives tonight and will remain for the Melbourne Cup. Allunga and Bristol are also coming. W. Jenkins will ride ■ Willie . Win In the Caulfleld Cup.
