French population statistics for t first quarter of 1937 are regarded the Press as highly unsatisfactbi especially when compared with the of Germany. They show a large-e cess of deaths oyer births, a decret in marriages, and an increase divorces. Births were 158,000, whi is 5000 fewer than for the first qtu ter of 1916 and 31,000 fewer than 1930. Marriages numbered 55,0 which is 1000 fewer than last year a: 17,000 fewer than in 1930. Divorc totalled 5200, or 680 more than li year. The number of deaths w 177,000. an average figure.
